Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reportedly planned a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) Kiev trip in anticipated approval of Ukraine aid, indicating that the Democratic senator knew that even if a deal on border security failed, his Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) would help pass the aid package with nothing to show for it.
Charlie Kirk posted to X Wednesday evening, “I just received word that Schumer has a CODEL (Congressional Delegation) to Kiev planned for two weeks from now to celebrate his and McConnell’s Ukraine funding win.”
“These trips take weeks of advanced planning to pull off. If this is all true, then it’s almost certain Schumer knew that even if the border deal failed, McConnell would always help him give Biden his war money without getting anything in return. Treachery.”
After Kirk's post, Utah Senator Mike Lee quoted the report, writing, "Pretty sure this is true."
Earlier in the day, the Wall Street Journal reported that Senate Democrats were still trying to get more Republican support for a bill that would provide military assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan after the GOP blocked legislation that tied the foreign aid to action at the southern border.
The larger package failed to gain the 60 votes needed to advance. On Wednesday, 49 senators voted in favor while 50 opposed the legislation after Republicans made it clear that the bill was dead on arrival.
As a result, Schumer scheduled a procedural vote for Thursday to advance a slimmed-down $95.3 billion version of the package that would fund military aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan but exclude policy changes at the US southern border.
The package reportedly includes $60 billion in aid for Ukraine, $14.1 billion for Israel military assistance, $2.4 billion to target Houthi rebels in Yemen that have launched attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, $9 billion in humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, Ukraine and $4.8 billion to help US allies in the Indo-Pacific deter aggression from China.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), signaling that the smaller package faced trouble on Thursday said, “I can’t go back and explain to people how we’re funding Ukraine but we’re not securing our own borders.”
Earlier this week, several Republican senators held a press conference slamming McConnell's leadership over the border deal.
