"These numbers should be a major wake-up moment for Democrats."
CNN's chief data analyst Harry Enten revealed the poll numbers on Thursday, exclaiming that it should be a "wake-up moment" for the Democrats. According to the CNN polling, 45 percent of Americans said that Trump would do a better job, while only 43 percent said that Harris would do a better job as president.
“If Democrats think that at this particular point, just because Donald Trump is unpopular, that they’re going to run away with it like a Heisman Trophy winner – that is not necessarily the case. These numbers should be a major wake-up moment for Democrats,” Enten said.
“When you match Donald Trump against his actual competition, Donald Trump comes out ahead…and that is why Democrats, in fact, cannot count their chickens just yet, because those eggs have not cracked at this particular moment,” he added.
“This looks a heck of a lot like the election result, despite the fact that Trump’s favorable ratings aren’t too hot to trot,” Enten said. With Trump's first 100 days in office, his poll numbers have dropped as he has launched tariffs against a number of different countries, and there has been uncertainty in the markets as a result. However, Americans are still in favor of Trump over Harris, according to the poll.
“The bottom line is when you look at Donald Trump in a vacuum, it’s one thing, but when you actually match him up against folks in the real world, all of a sudden his numbers look considerably better,” Enten added.
Additionally, 40 percent of Americans said that Trump is tackling the nation's issues, while only 32 percent said the same of Democrats in Congress.
