Portland Police arrested an occupant of the infamous "Red House" last week following a home raid over reports that William Kinney III allegedly threatened to kill employees and contractors working on a project next door. Kinney, a 41-year-old convicted felon with an extensive criminal history, was booked into jail August 4 on charges including possession of a short-barreled rifle, five counts of felon in possession of a firearm, and three counts of being a felon in possession of body armor, records show.
The Red House was at the center of a violent Antifa-Black Lives Matter autonomous zone in 2020, where far-left demonstrators erected borders and barricades to prevent the eviction of the Kinneys, a black Indigenous family who had been squatting at the home.
During the home raid, authorities recovered a cache of weapons, including a KelTec 9mm rifle in the living room, and three rifles and a shotgun in the bedroom, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Oregonian. Additionally, police seized a stockpile of ammunition and three sets of body armor. Kinney is forbidden from possessing firearms and body armor as a convicted felon.
Records show Kinney was released from the Multnomah County Jail after posting a low $25,000 bail. He reportedly harassed and threatened to shoot contractors working on the nonprofit Self Enhancement Inc.'s property next to the home, which sparked the raid. Kinney reportedly made threats for several consecutive months and threw stones at contractors in July before threatening a drive-by shooting, per the affidavit.
Kinney told police during the search of the home that the firearms belonged to his brother and protesters had left the body armor in the residence during the 2020 occupation, according to the affidavit.
The Red House, located on Mississippi Avenue, has been at the center of headlines for nearly a decade due to ongoing criminal activity. In 2020, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office issued an eviction notice after the Kinneys refused to leave the home following a 2018 foreclosure.
The court-ordered eviction resulted in a days-long occupation, where members of Rose City Antifa, a terrorist organization, and BLM created a violent autonomous zone after pushing out police. Armed demonstrators, who retook the house, erected barricades and camped at the property for days, resulting in standoffs with police.
At the time, the Kinney family owned a second home that they could have moved into. Protesters raised roughly $300,000 for the Kinneys to purchase hotel rooms, phones, and buy back the home.
When police moved to dismantle the autonomous zone and raid the home, authorities discovered a stockpile of weapons and firearms. Concerned residents reported that militants were also allegedly making Molotov cocktails at the time.
Democrat city officials helped the Kinney family keep the home following the occupation.
