It was announced on Tuesday that Pennsylvania’s Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman will have surgery and be fitted with a pacemaker that has a defibrillator after suffering a stroke.
The statement from Fetterman’s campaign says: "John Fetterman is about to undergo a standard procedure to implant a pacemaker with a defibrillator. It should be a short procedure that will help protect his heart and address the underlying cause of his stroke, atrial fibrillation (A-fib), by regulating his heart rate and rhythm."
The leading candidate in the Democratic primaries voted via emergency absentee ballot today, since he’s currently confined to the hospital
According to local outlet WTAE, Fetterman’s wife said her husband wanted to "go home and be with the kids and be out back on the road." But the Second Lady said that she’d be ensuring the lieutenant governor complied with the doctor’s orders.
Whereas the Republican side of the Senate primary race is a close one, John Fetterman’s lead amongst the Democratic contenders was described by the Post-Gazette as "commanding" earlier this month. They cited polling that had Fetterman at 53 percent, whereas Rep. Conor Lamb’s position in second place was only at 14 percent.
It was last Friday when Lt. Governor John Fetterman first suffered the stroke. It was at the insistence of his wife that he went to the hospital to begin with, after complaining about not feeling well.
In a statement released on Friday, Fetterman said that the stroke had been caused by a clot "from my heart being in an A-fib rhythm for too long."
""The good news is that I’m feeling much better, and the doctors tell me I didn’t suffer any cognitive damage. I’m well on my way to a full recovery. So I have a lot to be thankful for," Fetterman said.
