DHS slams local news for calling Guatemalan illegal immigrant charged with killing his infant daughter a 'Virginia dad'

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has hit back over claims that a "Virginia dad" has been charged with killing his three-month-old daughter. The father, 28-year-old Misael Lopez Gomez, is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala who came into the US under the Biden administration.

The DHS highlighted a headline from local news outlet WUSA 9, which stated, "Virginia dad charged after medical examiner says 'blunt force trauma' led to baby’s death." The article, published on Tuesday, did not say that Gomez was in the country illegally.

"Misael Lopez Gomez is NOT a 'Virginia dad.' He is an illegal alien from Guatemala and a cold-blooded killer accused of murdering his own three-month-old daughter. He admitted to illegally crossing the United States’ southern border in July 2023 near Albuquerque, New Mexico, under the Biden administration," the DHS said. "The lengths that WUSA 9 and the mainstream media will go to run cover for criminal illegal aliens is astonishing."

Fairfax County police announced on Tuesday that Gomez has been charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse. He is being held on no bond.

Officers responded to a residence in the Bailey’s Crossroads area on March 27 shortly after 7:30 pm for a report of an unresponsive infant. Officers determined that the infant was not breathing and began CPR, with Fire and Rescue personnel taking over life-saving efforts upon arrival. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The infant had been in the care of Gomez at the time of the incident. Detectives and hospital staff observed evidence consistent with abuse. Preliminary results from the autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

DHS has issued an arrest detainer "asking Virginia sanctuary politicians to not release a criminal illegal alien from jail back onto the streets," a press release stated. Gomez admitted to illegally crossing the southern border in July of 2023 near Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement, "This cold-blooded killer murdered his own three-month-old daughter. We are calling on Governor Spanberger to commit to not releasing this barbaric animal from jail into Virginia communities. This monster should have never been allowed in our country by the Biden administration. We need cooperation from sanctuary politicians to stop criminals from being released from jail to perpetrate more crimes and create more innocent victims."
