"Racism in admissions is both illegal and anti-American, and this Department will not allow it to continue."
Dhillon has had no time for discrimination in any capacity and has been fighting legal battles across the country to make sure that no ideology is used to backup biased practices in admissions or employment. She has been steadfast in ensuring that the Bill of Rights is upheld, even suing the city of Denver, CO, over their gun control restrictions.
UCLA admissions had admitted black and Hispanic applicants with lower academic qualifications over white and Asian applicants who were academically superior. As such, the DOJ found that UCLA was in violation of the law in their admissions practices.
"Racism in admissions is both illegal and anti-American, and this Department will not allow it to continue," Dhillon said.
"Federal law and the Supreme Court precedent are clear: Race discrimination has no place in our nation’s institutions of higher learning," said US Attorney for California Bill Essayli. "The pattern of illegal and odious conduct by UCLA’s medical school is abhorrent to our Constitution and our nation’s founding principles."
In a letter, the DOJ said that UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine in its "internal policies, publicly distributed literature, and email correspondence of its leadership, consistently and emphatically demonstrate DGSOM's intent to use race in admissions decisions despite the Harvard ruling." That ruling was made by the Supreme Court and determined that affirmative action in college admissions was in violation of the Constitution.
The DOJ cited specific examples, such as one in which the executive director of admissions sent a document to the dean of admissions about how to work around the Supreme Court ruling to ensure diversity of preferences in admissions. Part of the reasoning of the admissions personnel was their belief that black patients would be better served by black doctors. This implies, the DOJ writes, that "denying Black and Hispanic students admission to medical school now will injure and kill Blakc and Hispanic patients in the future."
In conclusion, the Dhillon writes "Having determined that DGSOM deliberately discriminated on the basis of race in its decisions to admit and deny applicants, the Department seeks to enter into a voluntary resolution agreement with the University to ensure that admissions practices are brought into legal compliance."
