”All board of education members in this room are mandated reporters under state law, as I am."
The Department of Justice is investigating an incident in which a left-wing activist reported a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) high school chapter to child protective services (CPS).
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said Monday that she is “looking into” the matter on X in response to a video from a school board meeting in Calvert County. There, a Maryland woman said that she reported the Club America chapter.
The woman was identified as Nancy Krause. Speaking at the meeting, she claimed that parents were not allowed to attend chapter meetings at Northern High School and raised concerns about the group’s activities, including the fact that board of education members served as guest speakers to the club.
“Students are widely recognized as a vulnerable population in critical, developmental stages and especially susceptible to influence,” Krause said at the meeting. ”All board of education members in this room are mandated reporters under state law, as I am."
“Based on the circumstances surrounding this event, a report was made to child protective services,” she added.
Luke Grover, president of the Northern High School TPUSA chapter, also spoke at the meeting, where he dismissed allegations that were raised.
“We’re not up for any problems, we’re not causing any harm,” Grover said, according to ABC 7 News. “We’re not doing anything wrong, our first meeting was in November, and we wrote letters for veterans and had productive discussions about how we can support our veteran community.”
The 17-year-old pushed back against the “misinformation” regarding the chapter, denying allegations that the club was “grooming children.” Grover noted that the club has banned “any adults that we did not know” from meetings due to online hate being directed toward them. He added that parents and adult volunteers who are known to members are permitted to attend.
