Canada's top public health officer urged Canadians to plan Thanksgiving with COVID-19 in mind. Dr. Theresa Tam told reporters Sunday that indoor holiday gatherings with family and friends should be kept small.

"We've got some serious planning to do," Tam said in a statement. "Not the carefree planning we had last Thanksgiving but rather some ingenious Canadian COVID-19 'holiday-hacks' that will ensure there are no viruses invited or passed around at our gatherings."

One of the 'holiday-hacks' Dr. Tam suggested is having a "virtual Thanksgiving" instead of in-person gatherings.

Tam said that if people decide to celebrate outdoors, they should follow physical distancing guidelines and should not share food or other objects with others, CTV reports.

In his address to the nation on September 23, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Canadians "it's all too likely we won't be gathering for Thanksgiving, but we still have a shot at Christmas."
