In a new security alert issued Sunday by the United States embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan the same day the Afghanistan president fled the capitol, US citizens in the area are being instructed to shelter in place and avoid both the embassy and airport.
The original statement issued this morning told US citizens that "the security situation in Kabul is changing quickly and the situation at the airport is deteriorating rapidly. There are reports of the airport taking fire and we are instructing US citizens to shelter in place."
"The US Embassy in Afghanistan has suspended consular operations effective immediately. Do not come to the Embassy or airport at this time."
An updated version of the security alert removed the warning for citizens not to go to the embassy or airport, as well as the warning that consular services have been suspended.
The US Embassy also informed US citizens that they need to complete Repatriation Assistance Requests for all travelers in their group to register for "any option that might be identified to return to the United States" as soon as possible.
The security alert comes as the situation in Kabul rapidly deteriorated overnight, with the Taliban entering the capitol on Sunday, and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani leaving the capitol for Tajikistan.
