Along with the New York representatives, many others in Congress joined in the call to have Columbia University President Minouche Shafik step down.
Every New York GOP member of the House of Representatives along with many others in Congress have called for Columbia University President Minouche Shafik step to down amid mass anti-Israel protests on campus after a disastrous hearing last week.
Over the last several days, anti-Israel protesters have taken over ground on Columbia University's campus, calling it the "Liberated Zone," and promised to stay there until Palestine was "free." Last week, during a hearing on the Hill, President Shafik was pressed on the topic by congressmen who were not satisfied by her answers related to antisemitic incidents happening on campus.
A letter was sent to Shafik from all the GOP House members from New York which stated, "Over the past few days, anarchy has engulfed the campus of Columbia University. As the leader of this institution, one of your chief objectives, morally and under law, is to ensure students have a safe learning environment. By every measure, you have failed this obligation."
"As Representatives from the State of New York, many of our constituents are directly impacted by the unfolding chaos on Columbia's campus. Based on these recent events and your testimony in front of Congress, we have no confidence in your leadership of this once esteemed institution," the letter added. "Last week, while you testified in front of Congress claiming you were successfully working to address antisemitism and committed to enforcing protest policies, a large unauthorized antisemitic riot unfolded on campus as the 'Gaza Solidarity Encampment.'"
NYPD officers eventually had to remove the "encampment," however, after authorities gained control over the grounds, the encampment was allowed to reconvene at the college.
The letter concluded, calling on Shafik to step down from her post due to the nature of the recent events and her lack of action and said, "We, the undersigned members, urge you to step down immediately so that someone who will take action against this mob can step up to meet the moment this crisis demands."
