Amid rising crime, fight to purge 'biased' language is on in Minnesota real estate listings

“There's been an increased awareness and wokeness since George Floyd's murder. We're seeing racial justice work being put into play."

The fight to purge perceived racism from everyday life had a victory today as activists cheered the tide change when it came to real estate home listings and inclusivity.

As first highlighted by Fox News, civil rights attorney Ben Crump publicly cheered via Twitter the removal of the phrase “Master Bedroom” from Minnesota real estate listings.

“Words MATTER! Good to see Minnesota phasing out the use of “master bedroom” in real estate listings. Many associate it with slavery, a repetitive reminder of plantation life. Together, we can create more inclusive, aware communities!”

He linked to a StarTribune article that highlighted the subtle shift in terminology that was enacted for today’s modern home listings.

It follows moves in past years being made by the Python community, Twitter, and GitHub.

A listing agent in the Minnesota area is quoted as saying "I'm a person of color and every time the term 'master bedroom' was used, I kept saying to myself, 'I don't like how it sounds. Now as I'm walking through a property, I'll just say it's the owners' or primary suite."

Ms. Jackie Berry went on to say: "It's something that has come up more and more the past few months. There's been an increased awareness and wokeness since George Floyd's murder. We're seeing racial justice work being put into play."

As with most of the recent push for diversity, this too is said to be motivated by the death of George Floyd. The piece goes on to say that gendered phrases like “his-and-hers” as well as “Jack-and-Jill” bathrooms are among gender phrases also being phased out.

But people on Twitter pointed out the silliness of the situation.

“If you associate the term "master bedroom" with slavery, you are the one with a serious problem”

“LOL”

“In Chicago this weekend, 72 people were shot, 11 killed, including 29-year-old police officer Ella French. But this civil rights leader/race-hustling charlatan is happy because they're changing the words in real estate listings. #leadership”

“How does anyone take this type of behavior seriously?”

This news comes just days after the University of Wisconsin-Madison removed a giant rock because somebody gave it a racist nickname in the early 1900s.

It was late last month that Senators Elizabeth Warren, Edward Markey, and Rep. Al Green introduced a bill for renaming more than one thousand places in the USA with “racist” names.
