A reporter for City News in Toronto earlier this week proclaimed that before issues of climate change can truly be addressed, capitalism, colonialism, and racism need to be dealt with.

City News anchor Melanie Ng asked the reporter "Who is impacted most right now as we look to the climate crisis in this country?"

"Overwhelmingly, Mel," the reporter answered, "it's the marginalized communities in our cities. And in order for us to really tackle the climate crisis as a nation, we're gonna have to really reckon with our colonial, and capitalistic, and racist past as a country because those things all impact those who are affected by the climate crisis."

This report came shortly after "Earth Hour," as Ng noted, the event where individuals are encouraged to turn off their lights for an hour. The event was started by the WWF and is held on the last Saturday in March every year.

The idea is to engage people in "switching off their lights to show support for our planet." Anyone can participate, as the event is "open-source."

This year, Earth Hour recommended that people take part digitally. They wrote: "In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Earth Hour global organizing team is recommending all individuals to take part online / digitally when possible. If you are planning to be in a public space or are thinking of spending the Hour with friends and family outside your home, please follow local guidelines, remember to wear a mask, and maintain social distancing."

Perhaps the Earth Hour folks envision people turning off all their lights and leaving only the digital blue light of their ever-present screens to guide them into the future.
