A Jewish family of three visiting from Teaneck, New Jersey, was peacefully walking along Collins Ave in Bal Harbour, Florida, on Tuesday when they were accosted by a group of antisemitic individuals in a nearby vehicle.
The vehicle's occupants shouted vicious insults at the victim, his wife, and his teenage daughter, threatening to kill and rape them while throwing garbage and a bottle of water at them. Eric Orgen posted about the harassment on Facebook:
Orgen was later interviewed by local outlet CBS 12 News, and stated:
"The guy in the car behind them saw everything go on. I saw him pull a gun and get in between - I mean he was almost there as our guardian angel just protecting us. I think once they saw him they just took off."
According to police, this incident is unfortunately one of many many such incidents that have taken place in the past several days. The Anti-Defamation League says that antisemitic violence is up significantly in the state of Florida, by 40 percent in 2020 compared to 2019.
In the wake of recent military clashes between Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the state of Israel, incidents appear to be even more on the rise countrywide.
Mayor Gabriel Groisman of Bal Harbour had strong words for would be perpetrators of antisemitic hate:
"The purpose of these attacks is clear. It's to put fear into the Jewish community’s hearts, and to the perpetrators of this attack, they must know that they will fail. We’re a strong community and a proud community and we stand strong with Israel and no amount of attacks or intimidation is going to work."
Groisman also iterated on Facebook that there will be "zero tolerance" for these types of attacks:
