The infamous bag of cocaine was found in early July 2023 as President Joe Biden and his family were at Camp David.
Three sources in the Secret Service community told Real Clear Politics that Cheatle and others in top agency positions wanted to get rid of the cocaine when it was found at the White House, however, others in the USSS Forensics and Uniformed Divisions rejected the push from Cheatle to get rid of the illicit drugs.
The infamous bag of cocaine was found in early July 2023 on a Sunday when President Joe Biden and his family were at Camp David. Multiple different disagreements ensued over what was going to be done about the cocaine. When one Uniformed Division officer was assigned to the case and wanted to treat it with a crime scene protocol, he informed his supervisors, including Cheatle and now-acting USSS Director Ron Rowe. He was then taken off the assignment afterward.
Hunter Biden has had a well-documented cocaine addiction for many years and many conservatives made jokes about the bag of cocaine belonging to him. While Joe as well as Hunter were not at the White House when the bag of cocaine was found, the incident took place after Hunter Biden had been staying at the White House for a period of time.
When the cocaine was found, Cheatle apparently thought it would create a media storm around the Biden administration. At the time, the USSS wrote in a press statement, "There was no surveillance video footage found that provided investigative leads or any other means for investigators to identify who may have deposited the found substance in this area."
An official at the time suggested it would be almost impossible to track down the drug's original owner given the number of people who frequent the area where it was found in the West Exec basement entryway of the West Wing. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre revealed during a briefing that the cocaine had been discovered in the heavily trafficked West Wing, an area of the building frequented by politicians, their families, staff, and tourists alike.
