Formula One driver Romain Grosjean, 34, survived a dramatic and fiery racing crash during the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday.

The crash occurred moments after the start of the race at the Bahrain International Circuit. The French driver's car sped into a barrier, obliterating his Haas car and setting it aflame on the side of the track.

Video footage shows Grosjean climbing out from the wreckage and over the guardrail as the fire rages behind him.

Safety officials reached the site of the crash almost immediately, but Grosjean was reportedly stuck in the wreckage for several seconds before fining his own way out.

"Romain is doing okay, I don’t want to make a medical comment but he had light burns on his hands and ankles,” Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said, the New York Post reports.

"Obviously he’s shaken… I want to thank the rescue crews who are very quick. The marshals and FIA people they did a great job, it was scary."

Governing body FIA said that Grosjean was stable and taken to a military hospital by helicopter following the crash.

Drivers and team members reportedly applauded Grosjean as images of him emerging from the crash were played back, according to the New York Post.

Fellow Formula 1 racer Lewis Hamilton tweeted his response to Grosjean's crash, saying, "I'm so grateful Romain is safe. Wow... the risk we take is no joke, for those of you out there that forget that we put our life on the line for this sport and for what we love to do. Thankful to the FIA for the massive strides we've taken for Romain to walk away from that safely."
