A New York judge denied bail to Ghislaine Maxwell on Tuesday. Maxwell is awaiting her trial on sex trafficking charges.
Fox News reports that Judge Alison Nathan ruled Maxwell was too much of a "flight risk" to be granted release on bail. She stands accused of procuring teenage girls for Jeffrey Epstein for the purposes of sexual exploitation between 1994 and 1997.
Maxwell remains at a New York detention centre in Brooklyn.
"There will be no trial for the victims if the defendant is afforded the opportunity to flee the jurisdiction, and there is every reason to think that is exactly what she will do if she is released," said prosecutors in a filing.
Maxwell's attorneys argued that she faced risk of COVID-19 exposure if she remained in detention.
She has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.
Her trial is set for July 2021.
