There is no way he can have a security clearance. National security risk."
Congressman Mike Lawler (R-NY) said Hamawy, 56, should come under investigation if he gets elected to the US House of Representatives. He wrote on X: "How in the hell has a defense witness in the 1993 WTC bombing, with ties to Al-Qaeda been nominated by the Democrats to serve in Congress? If elected in November, Congress should fully investigate his ties to terrorist organizations and determine whether he is fit to serve."
Hamawy, an Egyptian-born physician and former Army trauma surgeon, has been revealed to have ties to Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, otherwise known as the "Blind Sheikh," whose followers carried out the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Hamaway defended Abdel-Rahman when the sheikh was tried on charges of planning terrorist attacks in New York. Hamaway was backed by Senator Bernie Sanders and socialist streamer Hasan Piker in the race.
The Jewish Insider claimed that Hamawy and Abdel-Rahman's past relationship began during a road trip to Detroit in 1991. Hamawy translated for Abdel-Rahman during a news conference in which he denied any involvement in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Hamawy also defended the sheikh during his trial in 1995, when Abdel-Rahman was found guilty of preparing to carry out terror strikes in New York City, The Post Millennial previously reported.
During an April interview, Hamawy stated his intention to defund the United States military, abolish US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and dismantle the Department of Homeland Secuirty (DHS).
Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, of Florida, weighed in on his election, writing on X, "There is no way he can have a security clearance. National security risk."
Democrats in support of Hamawy have defended his candidacy, citing his previous service in the US Military, where he served as an Army doctor, CNN reported. Hamaway will face off against Republican opponent Gregg Mele in November.
