A group of healthcare workers in Oregon were driving on Tuesday before they and the drivers around them got caught in a blizzard, leading the workers to deliver on-hand coronavirus vaccines to fellow snowed-in drivers, local KGW8 reports.
The group of about 20 healthcare workers had just left an event related to coronavirus vaccinations, resulting in them having doses of the vaccine on hand, which were supposed to be delivered to other people.
Realizing that the vaccines would not make it to their intended recipients before they expired, the workers decided to offer other drivers stuck in the snowstorm the vaccine instead, ensuring the doses did not go to waste. The coronavirus vaccine must be preserved under extremely cold temperatures, and expires quickly if they are removed from such storage spaces.
A county ambulance was present while the workers distributed the vaccines to ensure safety.
All six doses the healthcare workers had on hand were administered, including to a man who was supposed to receive the vaccine that day but was also stuck in the snowstorm.
Josephine County Public Health Director Mike Weber described the administering of the vaccine on the road as among the "coolest operations he’d been a part of."
