Black Lives Matter activists have been trying to push for 2020-style protests in response to the killing of Corey Ruiz, who was killed by the police after he pulled a knife on them in Madison, Wisconsin. Hundreds marched through Madison, chanting anti-cop messaging after video of the shooting went viral on social media.
Nearly 500 people marched at the intersection of Williamson Street and South Baldwin Street, where the 38-year-old was shot three times on Wednesday after the confrontation with the police, per the New York Post. One of the officers suffered a knife wound during the confrontation, and the incident is under investigation. Ruiz had at least 40 criminal convictions, including multiple violent charges.
Activists called for the defunding of police and harassed diners on the street while they engaged in the march, claiming that Ruiz had been shot in cold blood by the cops. Ruiz, however, allegedly stabbed an officer with a knife during the confrontation that took place on Wednesday.
Madison Police Chief John Patterson told reporters on Wednesday that Ruiz was taken off his bike and then pulled out a knife. Officers tased Ruiz, but that did not stop him. Ruiz injured one officer with the knife as well as another, but it is not clear how, Patterson said. An ABC News analysis confirmed that Ruiz had a knife in his right hand during the confrontation.
Police were responding to a report of property crimes and bike theft when the confrontation took place. Video showed the officers take Ruiz to the ground, and a female officer attempted to deploy a taser, which failed. One cop yelled that Ruiz had a knife repeatedly. After bringing him to the ground and the taser failing, one officer shot Ruiz three times. A knife was then pulled off Ruiz's body in the footage.
During a Friday news conference where police in Madison were addressing the issue, activist Carlos Dixon was able to commandeer the microphone and berated the police and people present at the conference.
"We can shut this down, you can stop talking! You’re going to say the same thing you all say every time a black body gets shot down in this city,” Dixon yelled, adding, “Have no fear, the anti-Zionist is here!” He then said that "we have the power, not that badge, not that weapon."
He then compared the shooting of Ruiz to George Floyd in Minnesota. Dixon then walked to the podium, yelling about imperialism and Zionism, claiming he would not allow for any officials to speak or answer questions. In addition to the chaotic protests on the streets of Madison and the activist taking over the police press conference, Ruiz's family held a press conference on Friday where Ruiz's sister said that his lengthy criminal record “does not define" him. Ruiz had attacked police before, per the New York Post.
She also claimed that he had been "executed" by the police.
"I just want to thank the community and everyone that is standing up to support my family and my brother as we fight for justice for his execution," Ruiz's sister said. "There has already been so much negativity about him, and nobody even knows who he is. His criminal record tells a tale of trauma, of pain, of struggle. It does not define who my brother was."
She then suggested it was “speculation” that led to her brother getting shot, and not the knife.
"For him to be executed the way he was based on, in conclusion, based on speculation... I don't understand. I need somebody to help me understand why they felt it was okay to execute my brother," she added.
Ruiz had recently been released from prison and has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2007. He was convicted of battery to a law enforcement officer and resisting a law enforcement officer in 2023. In May, he was released and was also listed as having absconded from supervised release.
The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting because it involves police officers.
