Radical progressive Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, (D-MN) one of the leaders of the defund the police movement across the US, blamed Minneapolis police officers for the spiking crime in the city while also accusing the officers of not fulfilling their oath of office.
Omar said during a town hall event Saturday in Minneapolis, "What we must also recognize is that the reduction in policing currently in our city and the lawlessness that is happening is due to two things."
One of explanations she gave was that "…the police have chosen to not fulfill their oath of office and to provide the public safety they are owed to the citizens they serve."
Ironically, Omar has previously been accused of violating her oath as a Congresswoman by called for the "dismantling" of the US economy and political system. "As long as our economy and political systems prioritize profit without considering who is profiting, who is being shut out, we will perpetuate this inequality. We cannot stop at criminal justice system. We must begin the work of dismantling the whole system of oppression wherever we find it."
Omar had previously called police a "cancer," and said "…we need to completely dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department."
According to Fox News, violent crime has spiked in Minnesota by 17 percent and shattered records for homicides. Minneapolis, saw the surge in crime uptick after the death of George Floyd and the city council led the country in defunding the police. To add to the problems on the force, morale also suffered leading to a mass exodus of officers the department.
Rather than take any responsibility for her rhetoric, Omar blamed the Minneapolis Police Department and called it "dysfunctional."
"The Minneapolis Police Department is the most dysfunctional in our state and probably in the country.”
The radical activist Congresswoman said that accountability in the department "…doesn't exist in this moment."
"And I do believe that the current charter that we have does tie the hands of those who want want to have that accountability. We are mandated to have a specific amount of policing. We are mandated to have this kind of union contract, that you have right now. I don't know any other big city in the state of Minnesota that has the charter that we have."
Omar is backing a ballot measure which aims to replace the entire Minneapolis police department with a 'Department of Public Safety' and would remove the current requirement that the city have a minimum number of officers based on the city's population.
Meanwhile the "Squad" member who previously called the Minneapolis Police Department "rotten to the root" was revealed in FEC records to have spent over $22,000 on private security.
