In the wake of a federal law enforcement shooting during the apprehension of a Venezuelan illegal immigrant on Thursday night in Minneapolis, Mayor Jacob Frey said in a press conference that locals are asking city police to "fight ICE agents on the street."

Frey said, "there’s still a lot that we don’t know at this time, but what I can tell you for certain is that this is not sustainable. This is an impossible situation that our city is presently being put in, and at the same time we are trying to find a way forward to keep people safe, to protect our neighbors, to maintain order."

"And we’re in a position right now where we have residents that are asking the very limited number of police officers that we have to fight ICE agents on the street, to stand by their neighbors. We cannot be at a place right now in America where we have two governmental entities that are literally fighting one another."

"Why are we put in this position?" he asked, saying that this was "because we have approximately 600 police officers in Minneapolis, far fewer that are able to work at any given time, and there are approximately 3,000 ICE agents in the area." He later added that local police "are charged on any given day with investigating crime, stopping homicides from taking place, preventing carjackings. That’s the work of a police officer in a city. Meanwhile, we have ICE agents throughout our city and throughout our state who, along with Border Patrol, are creating chaos. This is not the path that we should be on right now in America."

On Wednesday night, federal law enforcement conducted a targeted traffic stop of a Venezuelan illegal immigrant, who fled the scene in his car, crashed it, and attempted to flee on foot. The subject began to resist arrest and violently assault the officer once they caught up to him, during which two subjects came from a nearby apartment and attacked the officer with a shovel and a broom handle. As the two attacked, the original subject broke free and struck the officer with what was described as "a shovel or broom stick."

"Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired a defensive shot to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg," DHS said. Both the officer and the subject were taken to the hospital, and the other two attackers were taken into custody.

This comes a little over a week after another shooting, in which anti-ICE activist Renee Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent after she rammed her car into him. It was revealed after the attack that the agent, Jonathan Ross, is suffering from internal bleeding.
