Jeffries will reportedly endorse Mamdani on Friday.
According to Politico, Jeffries will endorse Mamdani on Friday. The endorsement for Mamdani comes after he has been pressured to do so and comes right before early voting starts for New York City mayor.
The outlet reports, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the announcement will come on Friday afternoon in the form of a statement, but no event will accompany the endorsement. When Jeffries was asked about the potential endorsement this week, he said, "Stary tuned."
“I have not refused to endorse. I have refused to articulate my position, and I will momentarily, at some point, in advance of early voting," he added. The endorsement comes only after Jeffries has met with Mamdani on multiple occasions. When he has been asked previously, he had refused to say if he would endorse Mamdani.
The mayor's race in the Big Apple has come down to former Governor Andrew Cuomo running as an independent, Mamdani, as well as GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa. Mayor Eric Adams, who has dropped out of the race, swung his support behind Cuomo earlier this week, and endorsed him.
"Am I angry I’m not the one taking down the socialist, this communist? You're darn right I am. But this city means more to me than anything. And it is time for us as a family to come together," Adams said, later adding, "That's what I'm fighting for. I'm fighting for the family of New York. That's why I'm here today to endorse Andrew Cuomo to be part of this fight. That's why I am here, to endorse Andrew Cuomo."
Multiple Republicans have called on Sliwa to drop out of the race, possibly giving Cuomo a shot at beating Mamdani in the general election after he was beat during the primary by the far-left candidate.
