Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has expressed concerns about Kamala Harris selecting Governor Josh Shapiro as her running mate for the upcoming election.

According to a report by Politico, Fetterman’s advisors have privately communicated to Harris’ team that they do not believe Shapiro would be a suitable pick. They suggested that Shapiro is more focused on his own personal ambitions and would not be an effective candidate for higher office.

Shapiro is currently at the top of Harris’ shortlist for VP. Harris is reportedly holding in-person interviews over the weekend with the finalists for her selection. She is also scheduled to hold a rally on Tuesday in Philadelphia with her running mate, and Shapiro has confirmed he will be in attendance at the event.

Fetterman and Shapiro have had a strained relationship, per Politico. Fetterman’s advisors explained to the Harris campaign that when the two served together on Pennsylvania’s Board of Pardons, they had significant disagreements, particularly on criminal justice reform, with Shapiro being less lenient. Shapiro’s actions have led Fetterman to believe he often prioritizes his political ambitions and career over voicing support for correct policies.

Last week, Shapiro was asked by The Philadelphia Inquirer if he prioritized his career ambitions over his relationships.

"I recognize that at this moment, in probably every moment in my life, folks are judging me from the outside. And that’s fine," Shapiro responded. "It’s part of the business. I’m most comfortable with every decision I made that it’s always been about service."

Other Democrats have also expressed concerns about Shapiro as Harris’ running mate or have voiced support for other candidates in the running. Senator Bernie Sanders has said he wants Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, claiming he “understands the needs of working families.” Nancy Pelosi also reportedly favors Walz, according to Axios. Shawn Fain, president of the United Automobile Workers, has stated that the union is not in favor of Shapiro, primarily because of his previous support for school vouchers.
