"Perfect! Well done to everyone involved!" Oliver squealed.
"In Rochester last month," Oliver said, "ICE cornered some men working on a roof and were waiting for them to come down to arrest them. But a local pastor went on social media to summon people to protest."
Blue Georgia Democrats shared the clip with pride and joy.
Oliver played the video from a news report. Two men who only spoke Spanish were on the roof of a home when they were confronted by the Western New York Coalition of Farmworker Serving Agencies program director Maria Garcia demanding a warrant for the men.
The workers had been contracted to work on a private home. Protesters stood outside the home holding up signs reading, "Keep ICE out of Rochester." One of the men was eventually detained.
"They're here putting on a roof trying to make a dollar," said Rochester woman Ruth Reeves, "and paying taxes on that dollar. And ICE was here bothering them. So I came here to bother ICE."
At that, the LastWeek Tonight with John Oliver studio audience whooped and cheered. The news report went on to say that the Border Patrol vehicle at the scene was forced to drive away with slashed tires before they called in for a tow a few blocks away. The crowd cheered again.
"Perfect! Well done to everyone involved!" Oliver squealed. "I absolutely love when that woman said 'I came to bother ICE.' Because that seems reasonable to me: If ICE can show up and bother some guys at their roofing job, bystanders should be able bother ICE at their state-sanctioned kidnapping job. It is only fair."
The audience loved it.
