JUST IN: Missouri teen Kaylee Gain in stable condition after student beat her head against the pavement, is 'breathing on her own'

A little after a week after 16-year-old Kaylee Gain had her head smashed against the sidewalk by a 15-year-old student near Hazelwood East High School in Missouri, she is in stable condition and is breaking on her own.  
 
In an updated statement on the family's GoFundMe for Gain, her mother wrote, "This is April Kaylee’s mom I wanted to come on here to first and foremost and thank everyone for the [generosity], love & support u have shown for Kaylee and our family." 
 
"We are so happy and blessed to announce that Kaylee is now stable, breathing on her own, and was moved out of the ICU. She still has an incredibly long journey ahead of her but she is strong." 
 
Leading up to the announcement, Gain's grandmother made several statements on Facebook about the tragic incident but said the family would release a statement soon. 

"No matter your child's age, when they are hurt, your heart hurts too," she said in a Facebook post. She told the Daily Mail when the outlet reached out for comment about the updates, "The family will give a statement very soon. That's all I can say right now."  
 
On March 8, Kaylee Gain had her head repeatedly slammed into the pavement by a 15-year-old student identified as Maurnice DeClue. The 15-year-old in question was arrested on charges of assault initially.   
 
Over the next few days video of the incident went viral online sparking outrage against the school. Controversy enveloped Hazelwood East with backlash against its policies as well as DEI initiatives it has instituted.
