The D.C. judge who demanded that President Donald Trump’s name be removed from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts may have been doing him a favor. After a Friday-night squall in Washington, D.C., left a large hole in the ceiling and the center’s Grand Foyer scattered with debris, some were echoing a familiar refrain: “Trump was right.”
Online commentators noted that Trump had warned of the performing arts center’s state of dilapidation and disrepair in a May 30 post on Truth Social. “The Kennedy Center is broken, unsafe, and $busted, and has been for many years! ... So now, the Kennedy Center will collapse, both structurally and financially,” he said
Although nobody was injured by Friday’s ceiling collapse, the foyer was expected to be restricted over the weekend while damages were assessed, Just the News reported.
Roma Daravi, the center's vice president of public relations, said the collapse underscored the need for major renovations, a call that many on the Left have dismissed or openly resisted, just as they've resisted so many of Trump's attempted structural improvements on federal DC infrastructure.
"This structural failure stems from decades of neglect and deferred maintenance by the previous leadership, and there's no justification for futher delays in restoring America's cultural center," said Daravi.
Just a day before the roof collapse, The New York Times bemoaned the removal from an abstract-art stick figure from the center’s grounds.
In his May post, Trump slammed Obama-appointed Judge Chris Cooper of the U.S. District Court in D.C. for turning the renovations into a partisan wedge issue rather than allowing Trump to bring unity to the process.
He also pointed out that Cooper had a long history of making partisan decisions. Cooper also has a well-known conflict of interest through his wife, Amy Jeffress, a top former surrogate of Obama Attorney General Eric Holder who represented alleged Russia-hoax conspirator Lisa Page during John Durham’s special-counsel investigation.
More recently, Jeffress began representing former President Joe Biden during investigations into his use of an autopen for presidential pardons.
Cooper has bucked previous calls to recuse himself from politically sensitive cases due to his wife’s involvement in them.
“Judge Cooper and his wife, Amy Jeffress (obfuscation anyone?), should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump wrote. “Judge Cooper, like numerous other Crooked Judges on my cases, should be IMPEACHED.”
Trump, supported by his Kennedy Center board appointees, including then-acting director and president Richard Grenell (the former diplomat and acting director of national intelligence resigned in March) initially announced plans in January to add his own name to the building while undertaking a two-year renovation project that would keep it closed for a large portion of his second term in office.
The announcement came as flagging audiences forced the government-backed nonprofit to acknowledge the need for significant staff cuts and changes in its business model. But leftists who had long supported it bristled over Trump’s stewardship, and several of the artists booked on its performance schedule backed out in protest.
