A Liberal Member of Parliment has tested positive for coronavirus, making her the first member of the House of Commons to contract the virus.

Kamal Khera, who is the MP for Brampton-West, has been working as a nurse in an attempt to alleviate the strain on the healthcare system. It was during this time that she began to experience flu-like symptoms and self-isolated immediately.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Khera said "last night I was informed that I had tested positive for COVID-19."

"While I am still experiencing symptoms, I am in good spirits. I know that many Canadians are in much worse circumstances. My thoughts are with all families who have been affected by this public health crisis," she added.

Prime Minister Trudeau responded to Khera's announcement by saying “take care of yourself, Kamal. We’re all thinking of you — and hoping you get well soon."
