Wayne said a 2023 performance he gave for Harris' celebration marking the 50th anniversary of hip-hop felt like more of a "backyard barbecue" than a White House event.
Rap legend Lil Wayne heaped praise on one of President Donald Trump’s signature White House projects on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, where the five-time Grammy Award-winning artist said he was elated when he heard Trump was building the ballroom.
"I'm so glad to hear Trump say — when they was mad at him about building the ballroom, and he was like, 'Because everything we do we have to do it on the damn lawn,'" Wayne said. "So, people who don't know nothing [are] hearing that thinking he's just being Trump — no, for real, I was glad to hear him saying that,” he continued.
The rapper referred to a performance he gave in 2023 for then-Vice President Kamala Harris' celebration marking the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. Wayne said the event felt like more of a "backyard barbecue" than a White House event.
This is not the first time Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., has shown support for President Trump. In 2020, he stated that Trump's "Platinum Plan" for Black Americans could "give the community real ownership."
In 2021, the President pardoned Lil Wayne on his last day in office and lauded him for his “trustworthy, kindhearted, and generous” spirit along with his charitable work. Wayne had been found in possession of an illegal possessed firearm along with a bag of various drugs, Vanity Fair reports.
The White House ballroom, which was announced in July 2025, was described as a long-awaited facility to accommodate state dignitaries and officials. Construction of the ballroom began in September 2025 after the East Wing was cleared for redevelopment. Initially estimated at around $200 million, the project ballooned to roughly $400 million as plans expanded to include an even larger ballroom and East Wing modernization. Trump has said the ballroom is ahead of schedule and expected to open in September 2028. Once opened, the ballroom is slated to hold as many as 650 guests, eliminating the need for temporary tents on the South Lawn.
