Federal prosecutors say Luigi Mangione, the 27-year-old man accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan last year once told friends about a violent encounter with transgender women while traveling in Thailand.
According to a New York Post report, Mangione allegedly shared stories from his backpacking trip across Asia in WhatsApp messages, including one where he claimed he was “beaten up by seven ladyboys,” using a common slang term for transgender women. He even sent friends a photo of his bruised arm after the altercation.
Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges in the killing of Thompson, who was gunned down outside the insurance company’s investor conference in Manhattan in December 2024.
Authorities say the shooting appeared deliberate, and the Justice Department is seeking the death penalty. The case drew widespread attention not only because of Thompson’s position but also for the disturbing wave of online supporters who appeared to celebrate the attack on the major healthcare provider.
Mangione is due back in federal court on Dec. 5, though no trial date has been set yet.
Prosecutors haven’t said whether the Thailand incident or his erratic behavior abroad plays any role in their case. But investigators described the WhatsApp messages as evidence of a troubled man with a history of unstable behavior leading up to the alleged murder.
The federal indictment accuses Mangione of premeditated murder and weapons offenses. If convicted, he could face the death penalty or life in prison.
