A machete-wielding New Yorker who attacked three elderly people without provocation was fatally shot by police at Grand Central Terminal on Saturday morning.

An 85-year-old man and a 65-year-old man were cut in their heads on the 4, 5, and 6 subway platforms at around 9:50 am, according to police. A 70-year-old woman was also injured in the attack. All three victims were transported to local hospitals and are in stable condition.

The suspect, a 44-year-old man, was confronted by two New York Police Department detectives. Authorities said he ignored their commands and was shot three times. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The two detectives also brought themselves to the hospital for evaluation.

The suspect has not been identified, but was known to law enforcement. The suspect has numerous prior arrests, including incidents involving menacing with a sharp object.

One witness in the main hall of Grand Central explained the situation, according to The New York Post.

“I was coming from Connecticut when ‘boom,’ everyone got down on the floor fast,” he said. “Then the police said, ‘Get outta here! Get outta here fast!’ They said it was somebody with a gun and police (were) involved too. It’s scary. This is how New York City is now. It’s too much violence in New York City now.”

A worker at the station said he saw paramedics come up with somebody on a stretcher and were pumping his chest. “It’s crazy. You could be on the platform minding your business, and someone had a machete, it’s scary, scary, scary,” he said.
