Macron did say, however, that he would not "jail" the unvaccinated or "forcibly vaccinate them."

Debate was suspended in French Parliament on Wednesday after opposition lawmakers called out President Emmanuel Macron's comment that he wanted to "piss off" the unvaccinated.

"I am not about pissing off the French people," the president said in an interview with readers of Le Parisien on Tuesday. "But as for the non-vaccinated, I really want to piss them off. And we will continue to do this, to the end. This is the strategy."

Macron also admitted in the interview that the goal was to limit the rights and freedoms of the unvaccinated.

"In a democracy, the worst enemies are lies and stupidity," Macron said, according to The Guardian. "We are putting pressure on the unvaccinated by limiting, as much as possible, their access to activities in social life."

France, which boasts a vaccination rate of 90 percent, needs to see higher vaccination rates, said Macron, adding that he will aim to "piss them off even more" until they get vaccinated.

Macron did say, however, that he would not "jail" the unvaccinated or "forcibly vaccinate them."

“We have to tell them: from 15 January, you will no longer be able to go to the restaurant. You will no longer be able to go for a coffee, you will no longer be able to go to the theatre. You will no longer be able to go to the cinema.”

"When my freedoms threaten those of others, I become someone irresponsible. Someone irresponsible is not a citizen," he said.

Opposition lawmakers have called condemned Macron's statements.

"A president cannot say such things," said opposition lawmaker Christian Jacob, according to Reuters. "I'm in favour of the vaccine pass but I cannot back a text whose objective is to 'piss off' the French."
