Memphis mom faces murder charge for shooting, killing man she found hiding under 13-year-old daughter's bed

A mother in Memphis, Tennessee has been charged with murder after she shot a man to death when she found him hiding under her 13-year-old daughter’s bed.

Kendra Scott was arrested when police found a 20-year-old man identified as Rodderius Morton shot dead outside her home in Memphis just before 2 am on Thursday. Scott had shot him in the back of the head. Scott said that she came home and “saw a dude under my kids’ bed,” per the New York Post. “And I did what I had to do."

The incident took place after Scott's young teen daughter told police that she invited the 20-year-old man into the family home at around 1 am. Scott had started pounding at the door and yelled, “Who’s at my house?!” when she arrived at the home 30 minutes after the 20-year-old man arrived.

The 13-year-old daughter said that she was frightened when she saw that her mother was holding a gun and allegedly said that if she “sees a boy in my house I will put a hole in his a**," the daughter later told the police. The teen then allowed her mother in the house, when Scott then allegedly found Morton hiding under the bed, according to court documents.

"Get out of my house b*tch,” the mother allegedly screamed, and she followed Morton out of the door. The daughter and neighbor said that is when they heard the gunshot. The neighbor came to Scott's house, where the mother admitted, "I shot him, I shot him."

Scott was then arrested and charged with murder. “This incident started with the worst nightmare of any parent of a 13-year-old girl,” Scott's lawyer said. "Predictably, it ended in tragedy. One of the key questions in this case will be whether anyone could act rationally in this circumstance."

Scott's bond has been set at $100,000, and her next hearing is set for August 3.
