Following Kyle Rittenhouse's acquittal last month, Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has reversed its policy banning searches for Kyle Rittenhouse on its apps.
Following the August 2020 shootings of three men by Kyle Rittenhouse, of which he was found not guilty of all counts on November 19 after his defense lawyers argued that Rittenhouse fired in self defense, Meta, then known as Facebook, labeled the incident as a mass murder, and blocked searches on Facebook and Instagram for Rittenhouse's name, according to Fox Business.
"After the verdict in Kenosha, we rolled back the restrictions we had in place that limited search results from returning content related to key terms including Kyle Rittenhouse," a Meta spokesperson told FOX Business.
"While we will still remove content that celebrates the death of the individuals killed in Kenosha, we will no longer remove content containing praise or support of Rittenhouse," they continued.
A Meta spokesperson told the BBC it would "still remove content that celebrates the death of the individuals killed in Kenosha," but noted that "we will no longer remove content containing praise or support of Rittenhouse."
Meta previously allowed neutral conversations regarding Rittenhouse on its platforms, but removed content praising him. Searches for his name would result in a blank page.
