The family of Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade shooting suspect Lyndell Mays has set up a GoFundMe to help him navigate this "tragic time."
Mays' mother Teneal Burnside set up the fundraiser for her 23-year-old son, who remains hospitalized after the shooting and is also one of the suspects. That shooting took the life of a mother of two and injured many more. Mays suffered 9 gunshot wounds and has been hospitalized since the incident, per the New York Post.
The fundraiser, which has since been deleted, read "He is in the ICU fighting for a recovery from several surgeries from going to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration with his older sister."
"Getting shot multiple times at a time that was [meant] to bring so much joy to so many has [brought] pain and sadness to all that was attending," it continued. The firearm used in the shooting was reportedly stolen.
$100 was raised prior to his being charged on Tuesday in connection with that deadly shooting. He faces charges of second-degree murder as well as armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.
It is believed that the shooting stemmed from an argument between Mays and Dominic Miller, who was also charged on Tuesday with second-degree murder. Police learned from a friend of Mays that "several individuals wanted to know why Mays was looking at them."
Mays spoke to those individuals from a distance, the New York Post reports, and was seen on surveillance footage going over to them. At a certain point, Mays pulled out his gun and started chasing another man, shooting at him. Others then drew out their guns.
Mays said that he shot first, per court records. He told officers that it was "stupid" and that he "just pulled a gun out and started shooting."
"I shouldn't have done that," he said, "just being stupid."
