The Montreal police have said that a murder of a teenager is connected to a violent trend called "scoring," according to CTV News.
Earlier in November, 16-year-old Thomas Trudel was murdered in a shooting in Montreal.
Police described scoring as setting an "objective and they're going to brag about it on social media that they accomplished an exploit." This nearly always involves gangs and young people who wish to join gangs.
The police went on to say that this was a way for gangs to settle scores. Often, innocent victims are caught up in these acts of violence due to where they live.
Gangs do this to designate the territory in which they operate. Trudel, for instance, was not involved in any known gangs. Police have suggested that the boy was randomly targeted.
A witness to the crime said Trudel was asked what school he went to, only moments before he was shot.
"Your enemy, instead of going after you, will go after your neighbour or someone from your school, or who hangs out in the same park as you," said a local youth coordinator.
