A Muslim supporter of Zohran Mamdani was stunned in disbelief when he found out that the socialist mayoral candidate in New York City was in favor of decriminalizing prostitution. The Muslim man was speaking to former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, one of Mamdani's rivals in the race when he learned of the policy position.

Cuomo was speaking during a Saturday night appearance at the Masjid Ansarudeen Islamic Center in the Bronx when he asked a Muslim supporter of Mamdani, "If he does support legalizing prostitution, would you still support him?"

The supporter responded, "The answer is, Zohran would never ever sponsor a bill that would legalize prostitution as a Muslim brother, he would never ever do that."

Cuomo jokingly offered a $10 wager to bet on the issue, and later stated the Mamdani offers "a socialist philosophy that is anti-business, more anti-police, and would reduce the number of officers. It would legalize prostitution and the drug trade."

"Now, as a Christian, I’ll point out that the Bible speaks to this. In Leviticus, it condemns prostitution; in the New Testament, St. Peter speaks against intoxicants. In the Quran, prostitution is referred to as zina, and intoxicants are called haram. There are similarities between the two faiths, and I want to impress you with my knowledge of both the Bible and the Quran," Cuomo added with a laugh per the New York Post.

Mamdani has previously expressed strong support for legalized prostitution and has co-sponsored bills that would do so in the past. Earlier this year, when Mamdani was pressed on the issue, he stated that he wanted to handle it similarly to how former NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio handled it. “What I want to do is look at the ways in which the previous administration addressed this issue,” Mamdani said.

“I found that it created far more safety than what the current administration has done,” he added. At the end of his administration, De Blasio was preparing a number of reforms to legalize prostitution.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams, another opponent of Mamdani in the race, previously slammed the socialist candidate for the policy proposal.

“I can’t be more clear. I’m a man of God, just as Mamdani says he’s a Muslim. I don’t know where in his Quran it states that it’s okay for a woman to be on the streets selling their body,” Adams said. “I don’t know what Quran he is reading. It’s not in my Bible.”
