Police said the suspect, a man in his 20s, was taken to the hospital under the Mental Health Act, where he remains in “secure custody.”
A man was arrested and taken to the hospital after allegedly assaulting and urinating on a woman in downtown Vancouver early Thursday morning, police confirmed. The Vancouver Police Department said the 31-year-old female victim was walking near West Pender and Beatty Street around 6 am when she encountered a naked man standing on top of a parked car.
"The suspect began yelling, ran toward the victim, knocked her to the ground, and urinated on her,” the police department explained in a public statement.
Once this altercation occurred, bystanders who witnessed the assault quickly intervened and restrained the suspect. The bystanders proceeded to call authorities and hold the man until officers were able to arrive.
Police said the suspect, a man in his 20s, was taken to the hospital under the Mental Health Act, where he remains in “secure custody.” The department added that it will recommend charges against him.
“Vancouver Police will forward a report to Crown counsel for consideration of criminal charges,” the police said in their statement.
Constable Tania Visintin told 1130 NewsRadio, “She continued to walk away from this man, but he began yelling at her.” Visintin added that the victim has to deal not just with the physical injuries from being pushed onto the ground, but the memory of the entire incident that unfolded.
“This is also very disgusting,” she added. “So unfortunately, she has to now live with that memory, and that’s very unfortunate.”
