A young boy is dead following a shooting that took place in Wilson, North Carolina on Sunday.
A man allegedly ran up to the five-year-old while he was playing and fatally shot him in the head.
Cannon Hinnant was reportedly playing on the street outside of his father's house when their 25-year-old neighbour Darius N. Sessoms ran at the child, pulled out a handgun and shot him according to The Blaze.
First responders arrived at the scene and the boy was taken to Wilson Medical Center and pronounced dead.
The murder was witnessed by the child’s siblings who are seven and eight-years-old.
Doris Labrant, who is a neighbour, also witnessed the incident and could not process what had happened at first.
"My first reaction was he's playing with the kids," she said. "For a second I thought, 'That couldn't happen.' People don't run across the street and kill kids."
She said she realized the gravity of the situation when she saw the boy’s father react to the scene.
Sessoms was taken into custody on Monday and has been charged with first-degree murder. He is currently in the Wilson County Jail and is being held without bond.
The motive behind the murder has not yet been determined by authorities who insist that it was not a random act and Sessoms knew Cannon’s father.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family and has raised approximately $5,580.
The page was created by a family cousin named Christina Prezioso who wrote, "A beautiful 5 year old baby boy riding his bicycle was shot by his neighbour point blank in Wilson NC."
"One minute he is enjoying his life, the next it all ends because he rode into his neighbours' yard," she wrote. "5 years old guys!! Nothing prepares a parent for the loss of their child. No child should ever have their future stolen from them."
"As of now the person involved is still hiding like the coward he is. Prayers that he is found soon and justice can begin. I am starting this GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses and any help along the way for both Cannons mother & father with permission. If you can help in any way please do."
