“No information regarding a weapon on the roof was ever passed to our personnel."
The acting director for the Secret Service told Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) during a hearing on Tuesday the agency never received information in the moments leading up to the attempted assassination of Trump that there was a weapon on the roof.
During Lee's questioning of Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe, the Utah Senator said, "You've got a guy with a gun on a rooftop 136 yards away from the stage. You know that he's got a gun at that point. What happened during that time period that did not result in President Trump, his protective detail being notified of that, and him immediately being removed from the situation?"
Rowe answered saying that in those moments, “No information regarding a weapon on the roof was ever passed to our personnel."
The Utah Senator asked in response, "How is that even possible?"
Rowe added, "I believe that information, and this is probably something my colleague can expound on, information that was in local law enforcement channels but did not cross over and make it to Secret Service awareness."
FBI Deputy Director Paul Abate added that the local law enforcement realized that Thomas Matthew Crooks had a gun on the roof around 30 seconds prior to the shots going off. However, Trump was not taken off the stage during that time.
“But there’s still time. At that point if there were an open channel of communication in which they were able to tell him he's got a gun take him out you could still take president trump off the stage,” Lee said in response.
Rowe then said the information about the gun "stayed in local channels and did not make it over to Secret Service." Lee posted the exchange on social media, saying, “Would Secret Service have allowed this to happen to President Biden? Or Vice President Harris?”
