The curfew will require illegal immigrants to remain inside shelters from the hours of 11 pm to 6 am.
The curfew will go into effect on Monday and will require illegal immigrants to remain inside shelters from the hours of 11 pm to 6 am. This applies to 20 shelters in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, impacting 3,600 illegal immigrants, about half of whom are single adult males, according to the New York Post.
The decision follows an increase in criminal activity involving illegal immigrants, such as the brutal attack on NYPD officers, the moped gang crime ring responsible for at least 62 robberies, and the firing of shots at a female security guard that struck a Brazilian tourist.
Officials in the Big Apple have been debating the implementation of a curfew and this directive will align with the curfews that are in place at homeless shelters.
A spokesperson with City Hall said in a statement: "New York City continues to lead the nation in managing this national humanitarian crisis, and that includes prioritizing the health and safety of both asylum seekers in our care and New Yorkers who live in the communities surrounding the emergency shelters we manage," a City Hall spokesperson said in a statement.
"Beginning this week, we will be instituting a curfew policy at our HPD emergency sites, in line with curfews already in place at traditional DHS shelters and NYCEM respite sites that serve migrants and longtime New Yorkers experiencing homelessness. This policy will allow for more efficient capacity management for migrants in the city’s care," the statement said, according to NYP.
The Adams administration first placed curfews on four illegal immigrant shelters back in January. Local residents have been filing complaints to the City about the increase in crime and migrant beggars knocking on their doors and begging for cash throughout all hours of the day.
The majority of shelters that will be under curfew are located in Manhattan including the Imperial Hotel, The Gatsby Hotel, and the Redford Hotel.
