16-year-old suspected of stealing vehicle found stuck in garbage bin

On Monday, police received a call reporting that a 68-year-old man was found injured, lying in an alley near Bannerman Ave. and Charles St. early that morning. The man had been run over by his own car after the thieves got ahold of it, he explained to police.

The man was confronted and hit by the suspects, one male and one female, while attempting to enter his car. He was hit with an unidentified object and then pulled from the car. The suspects then drove off, running over the man in process and leaving him with significant injuries.

Police say the man was later taken to the hospital with an unstable condition.

The vehicle was discovered around 9:30 a.m., approximately an hour after the theft with a female suspect driving it near McPhillips Street and Mapleglen Drive, which led to a chase.

Police say the vehicle was found again some time later in the Riverbed neighbourhood, abandoned. They received a call from someone in that area who heard someone calling for help from within a residential garbage bin some time in the early afternoon.

Police uncovered the female suspect in the garbage bin, she was carrying the keys to the stolen vehicle. She became stuck inside the bin after ditching the stolen vehicle and trying to hide from police.

The female suspect, 16, is now facing charges of aggravated assault and robbery, in addition to flight while pursued by a peace officer and dangerous operation of a conveyance. She remains detained in custody.
