A recent report called the Street Needs Assessment (SNA) showed that 40% of Toronto city homeless shelter spaces are being occupied by refugees.
The report says that the increase in refugees using the facilities has created “significant pressures on the shelter system in Toronto”.
According to figures, 2,400 beds have been added primarily to respond to the increased demand placed on the system by refugees.
Recent financial statements show that the city has spent an excess of $64.5 million dollars on accommodating refugees.
The numbers also shows that 24% of the refugees staying in city-administered shelters are single adults, while 30% are youth and 80% are families.
The quantity of refugees accessing homeless shelters in Toronto has increased seven-fold since the last report in 2013.
Migration was also reported as the number one reason for homelessness in Toronto.
The report also shows that 4% of the total homeless population are veterans who have served in the military. Nearly a tenth of which must struggle braving the winter outdoors.
