At around 10:40 am, a member of the Austin Independent School District police force was shot in the leg near Northeast Early College High School and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The school was placed under lockdown, and will remain closed on Wednesday.
Not long after, police received numerous reports of a double homicide "involving a male and female victim" 12 miles away. When they arrived at the home, they discovered two victims with "obvious signs of trauma." One died on scene, and the other passed away at the hospital. Investigators believed that this incident preceded the event at the school.
Shortly before 5 pm, a male cyclist was shot on West Slaughter Lane, Austin and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two hours later, while responding to a burglary call in southwest Austin, an officer was shot during an encounter with the suspect. The former was injured, while the latter escaped without harm.
The suspect attempted to flee the scene in a vehicle, but crashed and was promptly arrested and taken to Travis County Jail. While this unfolded, more officers responded to the home where the burglary had taken place and discovered two people dead inside.
Police later connected the suspect to a home 80 miles away in Bexar County, near San Antonio, where two other victims had been killed. It was not clear when their murders took place, or what the suspect's exact relationship was with the residents. As NBC News reports, the crime scene investigation unit is on the case.
