Air Canada to resume certain international flights next month

There will be 97 international and domestic destinations offered by the company—down 220 from last year. The airline says it still offers "wide opportunities for travel and connectivity."

Flights travelling to the US will be resuming on May 22 and there will be six destinations by May 25, including Washington-Dulles, New York-LaGuardia, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston.

Air Canada says it will possibly add more US destinations in late June. It will also continue with flights from major hubs heading overseas in June, including:

• Toronto — Frankfurt
• Toronto — London
• Toronto — Tokyo
• Toronto — Tel Aviv
• Toronto — Zurich
• Montreal — Brussels
• Montreal — Frankfurt
• Montreal — London
• Montreal — Paris
• Vancouver — Hong Kong
• Vancouver — London
• Vancouver — Seoul
• Vancouver — Tokyo

Air Canada will add these destinations in June/early July:

• Montreal — Athens
• Montreal — Geneva
• Montreal — Rome
• Toronto — Amsterdam
• Toronto — Athens
• Toronto — Lisbon
• Toronto — Munich
• Toronto — Rome
• Calgary — Frankfurt
• Vancouver to Shanghai (awaiting government approval)

Even with the new additions, non-essential travel outside of the country is still not recommended by the government as of Friday.

The border between Canada and the US is closed until June 21 for non-essential travel.

Some other countries still have their borders closed to international tourists, such as Italy which plans to reopen to tourists on June 3. That country will not impost a mandatory 14 day quarantine period.

When returning to Canada, international travellers will be required to quarantine for a 14 day period, per the Quarantine Act.

"As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, during which as much as 95 percent of our flights stopped operating and which has left us flying to less than half last year's destinations, our customers are expressing their eagerness to travel, where it is safe to do so," said Lucie Guillemette the Executive Vice-President of Air Canada.

"Air Canada is ready for take-off, and we look forward to welcoming our customers onboard."
