The revelation comes as the aviation industry has faced headwinds both privately and federally.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Sunday on X that, due to their campaign to recruit video gamers as air traffic controllers, they had nearly fully met their hiring goals.
“In April, we launched a NEW CAMPAIGN to recruit video gamers as air traffic controllers — and supercharged the entire hiring process to get the BEST BRIGHTEST in faster,” Duffy wrote. “The results are HISTORIC: 94% of hiring goal met — fastest time ever to reach target; 2,000+ hired — the most in a single year; 2,000+ ‘best brightest’ candidates in the pipeline — reaching the Academy quicker than any class before them, thanks to the most streamlined hiring process. We’re building the strongest, sharpest workforce in aviation history.”

The revelation comes as the aviation industry has faced headwinds both privately and federally, as funding legislation battles have repeatedly thrown air traffic control into the midst of stubborn political disputes. Recent federal shutdowns and funding disputes have placed additional pressure on the FAA, raising concerns about staffing, delays and the ability of the agency to maintain normal operations with reduced or no funding.
Air traffic control has remained a particular concern because of the specialized training required for the position and the time it takes to bring new employees into the workforce. The staffing shortage has also drawn increased attention from lawmakers and the Trump administration as officials look for ways to prevent potential future disruptions from becoming widespread.
The 43-day federal government shutdown that reached from October 1–November 12, 2025 was triggered by a longstanding legislative standoff over expiring Affordable Care Act insurance subsidies. Senate Democrats repeatedly blocked House spending bills that omitted certain health care credits, plunging the nation into a historic 43-day funding crisis. The shutdown placed immediate pressure on an already strained aviation system, forcing roughly 13,000 essential air traffic controllers to manage high stress shifts entirely without pay. This halt to the overall recruitment pipeline severely complicated ongoing, urgent efforts to rebuild and modernize the nation's specialized aviation workforce amid persistent, year over year staff shortages, CNBC reported.
