Early Wednesday morning, three law enforcement officers working undercover in Chicago were injured in a shooting occurring near a police station.
"One officer from the Chicago Police Department and two Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) agents were shot around 5:50 a.m. near the intersection of 119th Street and the ramp onto Interstate 57, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said at a press conference," according to Fox News. "The three officers were riding in the same unmarked, undercover vehicle attempting to enter the freeway when they were fired upon from the street, Brown said."
According to Brown, all three officers were working undercover. One ATF agent was hit in the hand, while the other was hit in the side of their torso. The Chicago police officer was "grazed in the back of the head by a bullet."
All three are expected to make a recovery, their injuries are not believed to one life threatening. They were transported for treatment to Advocate Christ Medical Center.
Wednesday’s incident happened within the police department's 22nd District that serves Morgan Park on the Far South Side, according to Fox News.
Brown said that as of late Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made.
"Our officers are performing their jobs at the highest levels. They’re risking everything to protect the people of Chicago. And this includes our collaboration with ATF. ATF officers are also giving everything to protect the people of Chicago. No one would do what these officers do. This is a very challenging time to be in law enforcement, but they are rising to the challenge," said Brown. "The work that they do is extremely dangerous."
This most recent shooting comes on the heels on a particularly dangerous July 4th weekend in Chicago. Police reported that over the long weekend, 100 people were shot, two of which were officers. 18 people were killed in homocides, compared to last year where 17 people were fatally shot, and an additional 70 wounded by gunfire.
In Chicago this year, 36 officers have been shot, including Wednesday’s incident. The two officers shot over the weekend were attempting to break up a crown of partygoers in Austin at around 1:30 am. Chicago police Commander Patrina Wines was struck in a foot, while an unidentified sergeant was grazed in a leg, according to the Chicago Sun Times.
Alderman Matt O’Shea told the Chicago Sun Times that gang members have been "emboldened" with the recent struggle with manpower on the force.
"We have more than 100,000 gang members in the city of Chicago," said O’Shea. "They are emboldened and have nothing to fear from law enforcement. The police are under siege."
"We’re at a critical point in the city of Chicago. We need help. Police can’t do it alone," he said, adding that "in some communities, mothers and fathers are scared to let their kids out in front of their house. We continue to have these episodes here on the South Side, and today was another example of the utter lawlessness we see in the streets."
