BC authorities looking at denying drivers licence renewals to people who don’t pay COVID fines
The province of BC is eyeing measures that would prevent people from renewing their driver’s licences if they still owe outstanding fines for breaking the city’s numerous lockdown regulations.
The province of BC is eyeing measures that would prevent people from renewing their driver's licenses if they still owe outstanding fines for breaking the city's numerous lockdown regulations.
The changes to the Motor Vehicle Act are now being studied by the provincial legislature. If passed, it will mean that a "RTI" or "Refuse to issue" will come up in the system for anybody who had an unpaid fine given out under the Emergency Program Act or the COVID-19-Related Measures Act, according to Global News.
The Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnword had the following to say:
"We've already moved up the deadline for sending unpaid COVID-19 fines to collections. Now, we're going to refuse to issue offenders a driver's licence or vehicle licence if they still won't take their tickets seriously and pay up."
"That small minority of persons who have been fined for violating the rules in place to protect us all are going to be held accountable for the debt they owe."
As of March, the amount of fines for non-compliance with the lockdowns was also increased to $575 from the previous $230. People who host illegal parties and events get a whopping $2300 fine if they are caught.
