An indigenous BC woman died following a shooting in Edmundston, NB, involving a police officer, according to CTV News.
On Thursday, a request was received by the Edmundston Police Force to check on the 26-year-old’s well-being at about 2:30 a.m. at an apartment building located on Canada Road.
The woman confronted the officer while holding a knife and making threats, according to police.
Police say the officer then fired their weapon at the woman, injuring her. She later died at the scene following efforts to resuscitate her.
The woman's family identified her as Chantel Moore. She is a part of the Tlaoquiaht First Nation close to Tofino, BC.
Nora Martin, her grandmother, said Moore made the move to New Brunswick about two months ago in order to be near her young daughter who was living in Edmundston with a relative.
Family members say Moore’s boyfriend was the person who asked police to check up on her after she said she was being harassed.
"She just moved into her own place two days ago and I guess somebody in the neighbourhood or in the town had been following her or hanging around her place," Martin said.
The police officer involved is now off-duty, but has not currently been suspended. Robinson said his police future will depend on the investigation’s outcome.
"The Edmundston Police Force has requested the services of an independent agency to conduct a review of the incident to ensure police actions were appropriate and conform to policing standards," police said in a statement.
"As a matter of accountability and transparency for the independent review, the New Brunswick RCMP is providing investigative and forensic support."
