Just six days after President Biden hosted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Washington the US decided to raise traffics on Canadian lumber.
This came in spite of Biden and Trudeau's promising cooperation. One MP, for instance, said that "Canadians were promised a renewed relationship," according to Blacklock's Reporter.
The US will raise tariffs on Canadian lumber from 9 to 17.9 percent. This will affect already the already struggling lumber industry in British Colombia and New Brunswick.
Despite these severe tariffs, the prime minister said that his trip had reaffirmed "their commitment to advance the Canada-US relationship."
"The US president didn’t even warn the prime minister that America would be doubling tariffs on softwood lumber," said one Conservative MP. "Either Prime Minister Trudeau didn’t mention softwood lumber in his meeting with President Biden in Washington, or the president just doesn’t put much stock in what the prime minister has to say," he added.
Trudeau's cabinet reacted to these tariffs by saying they were disappointed. "These unjustified duties harm Canadian communities," said Trudeau's trade minister.
Many commentators expected that Canada's relationship with the US would improve following Biden's election as president, after the somewhat rocky years of the Trump presidency.
