WATCH: Black firefighter who spent life savings on new bar loses it to Minneapolis looters

Korboi Balla was planning on opening his bar in March until the pandemic forced him to put his plans on hold. He was getting ready to open the bar again after restaurants in Minnesota were told they could start reopening on June 1.

By Friday morning, the bar was completely destroyed following protests against the death of George Floyd—a black man who died in the custody of Minneapolis police on Monday. The protests caused looting throughout the city.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” Korboi Balla said to CBS News on Thursday. “It hurts, man. It’s not fair, it’s not right. We’ve been working so hard for this place. It’s not just for me, it’s for my family.”

As Balla was giving an interview to reporters, more looters broke into the bar attempting to get at his safe.

“As we were standing in front of the restaurant, people were in the back trying to steal the safe!” Balla’s wife, Twyana said on Facebook. “This just happened an hour ago in broad daylight!”

She also said that the family does not have insurance for the business.

“I’m hearing people say F*** the business they have insurance WELL WE DON’T AND THIS IS ALL OUT OF POCKET,” Twyana wrote. “Let someone come run in your home and loot for the cause then let’s see you be ok with it!”

“Justice for George Floyd but not this kind of justice,” she added.

“There must have been an explosion because the whole front part of the building is gone,” Twyana said.

On Thursday, Balla started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to rebuild the bar. The campaign raised more than $173,000 in its first day and has raised about $290,000 so far.

Over 170 businesses around the Minneapolis-St. Paul areas were looted or damaged since the death of George Floyd on Monday.
